Ping Your Blog

As you know, when it comes to making money from a blog, I am a big adherent to the traffic gets you money philosophy. I know that it is possible to make money with lower traffic numbers that convert well, but for the most part, and most bloggers, the aim is a big audience first and formost. The more readers, the more likely you will make money from your blog or website whether that comes from Adsense ads or affiliate sales.

Of course, getting traffic is easier said than done, and is the subject of books and essays and other blogs and so on...more than I can cover in one post. So tonight, let's concentrate on one thing you can do quite easily to increase your readership.

After you have written the perfect blog post you need to get it out there so the search engines can find you and crawl your blog content to learn what it is about and give you a place in the search results. That's where pinging comes in. So what is pinging exactly? I dunno....well I kinda do....pinging alerts the search engines that you have posted some new content.

Pinging is very important in getting your blog the attention it deserves and get you the traffic you are after. Along with submitting to blog and website directories, posting lots of content, commenting and linking to other blogs, pinging is one of those things ya just gotta do if you want to be a successful blogger and make money.

Although pinging sounds fairly technical, it isn't really. It's just a matter of going to the ping sites and submitting the url for the blog post you have just written, after that the ping company does the rest, and the best part is, it's free!

Here are my favorite blog pinging sites, in fact, these are all of the ones I currently use.

FEED SHARK
PINGOMATIC
TECHNORATI

If you have just written your best post, the first thing to do is copy the URL for the post you have written. Now this is not the URL of your blog, it is the one for the specific post. If you are using Blogger, the easiest way to find it is to click on the date that shows at the bottom of the post. That will bring up the individual post, and the URL that goes with it. Copy that and head on over to one of the above ping sites and enter the URL and the other information they require. Provided you haven't linked to another site in your link field, you can also get the URL of the individual post by clicking on the post title.

The post title will look something like this:http://adsensemakesyoumoney.blogspot.com/2007/09/ping-your-blog.html

Some of these sites may want you to register your blog with them first, and that is OK, doesn't take long either. They may also request a link on your site, give it to them, after all, they are pinging you for free.

One more point, if you are using Blogger, after you post they will ping you blog to Weblogs automatically. However, it's been my practice to ping the above mentioned sites anyway.
