If you read the experts, guys like Darren Rowse over at ProBlogger for instance, you will realize that most of the truly successful bloggers, the guys making a full time income from blogging, are diversified. They haven't got all their eggs in the Google Adsense basket, or any other single basket for that matter. They make their blog money from various programs and methods, some pay more than others, and some pay very little, but at the end of the month it all ads up.
That makes good sense to me. Blogging is a very fluid business, changing and growing everyday and in a world that is not standing still, it's not a good idea to become dependent on any one thing as your single source of income.
That's OK because the beauty of blogging is that it does offer various ways to make money. Granted, some are more lucrative than others, some work good on one blog and not another and some don't work at all. It's up to you as the blogger, and me as one of your advisers, to figure out what works and what doesn't on your blog.
For example, I use several methods to make money from my blogging. I have Adsense Ads, Amazon Products, AdEngage Ads and AuctionAds as well as a couple of other affiliate programs on some of my other blogs. In addition, I partner with another blogger to sell t-shirts and other clothing through our website, Cross the Line Designs
In addition to the methods I use, there are bloggers who make good incomes selling informational products and books through their blogs and also by growing an email list allowing them to notify potential customers of their newest product offerings.
The key to successful monetization of a blog is to look for ways to make multiple online incomes that fit with your blog and your own personal style. It's unlikely you'll sell many women's shoes on a blog about the Masonic Lodge Not only does this apply to affiliate programs, it also applies to advertising networks like Adsense who provide contextual ads that match or compliment your blog content.
It's also a good idea to experiment with several money making options and see which ones work the best on your website. Depending on the type of blog, and the subject matter, affiliate sales may make more than Adsense and vice versa.
One final point. As important as it is to diversify your income streams, it equally important to monitor and track each of the respective income streams to see which ones are working and which aren't. Then you need to decide whether to try and optimize or tweak the blog to improve the income it generates or try something different. I have found that ads from one ad provider work better than others on some blogs, I have also discovered that some blogs work great for selling Amazon products, while others are no good for it at all.
Diversify, experiment and track your results until you get it right, and then keep doing it.....eventually you'll strike gold!
