Well, after a couple of years of what I can only describe as hard, but enjoyable work, I can now say that I am starting to make money blogging. Not a lot of money mind you, but I am making more money from my blogging efforts than ever before.
So...is it time to analyze what I am doing that is working? Why am I now making a little more money than ever before? Well, I have tried to figure it out. I did a little bit of blog optimizing some time ago, and also moved some ads around, changed some colors and ad layouts, but nothing dramatic.
I've also added some blogs to my blog empire, which of course may count for something, but nope, it isn't really that either.
After some careful checking my Adsense results, it seems most of my income is coming from one blog in particular, and some of the other ones, which I think should be doing better, aren't performing at all.
The current top performing blog is in a niche, a niche that hasn't a lot of competition, and is about a topic with some good keyword opportunities. This tells me that one of the keys to this business is finding the right niche...and then blogging the hell out of it.
Yup...that is the other thing that I feel is making the difference, in fact the most difference is that I have been increasing my posts. The more posts, the more visits, the more money. Still not bragging money, so don't get me wrong. I am a long, long way from quitting my day job. But I am closer today than I was two years ago.
First let me give you a little background. I have on the go about 35 blogs. Some of them I don't update regularly, some I do almost daily, or close to it. As the number of posts grows, so do the visitors and my search engine rankings. More posts and keywords mean you will show up earlier in searches. So that is one thing.
The other thing is, regular posting is imperative. I have one blog, the first one I started that has well over 200 posts, and was getting over 500 hits a day, everyday. Then I got distracted with these other blogs, and stopped posting on it as frequently. It wasn't long until my hits dwindled, until the recently bottomed out at around 12 hits a day....not good.
In a matter of a couple of months, that blog when from 60 to 0 and now I am trying to revive it. However, in all of those months when I was getting pretty decent hits a day, it still wasn't a money maker because it was, for one thing, too general.
Blogs that earn money need focus. That's the only way people will visit your ads. Otherwise, you end up with a mixture of ads, and many of them are not related to anything, so it is pretty much hit and miss as to getting clicks and therefore money.
So....tonight's lesson is, find a niche that you can write about regularly, and then write and post frequently. Don't lay off when the visitors start coming, instead, pour it on, and keep pouring it on.
Blogging for money is fun....but it ain't easy.....
