Making Money Using Keywords

If you want to be the darling of the search engines, or improve your search engine optimization, (SEO) you need to be paying attention to keywords. Keywords are important for making money from your blog.

But wait! You ask, what exactly are keywords?

Keywords are the words you use in your written posts that describe things that people are searching for, and what you blog is about. Keywords are also used by advertisers bidding on ad space on your blog or website. They use them to decide if your blog is about the kind of things they are selling or promoting and therefore make your website a good fit for their purposes. In other words, keywords are important for making money on the internet or making money from writing.

There are various tools available to help you find the best keywords for your blog, depending on what you are writing about. Some of the tools are quite fancy and will give you loads of information about the keywords, their popularity and so on...however, most of these tools, at least the ones that are any good are expensive. Or at least cost money, and there is no guarantee they are really any good. If you are serious about making money with a website, you also have to control how much money you are spending. So be careful about signing up for elaborate keyword tools that cost a lot of money.

Keyword tools can also show you words or themes that might give you an idea that you can write about, which makes them very useful.

However, before you go signing up for a keyword tool program, let me make another suggestion, particularly if you are just starting out as a blogger and don't want to spend a lot of money. Pick yourself up a 'thesaurus' or even an online version and you will have a pretty useful keyword tool.

For the unwashed among us, a thesaurus is similiar to a dictionary. It contains lists of words and all their synonms, which for the really unwashed, means words that mean the same thing. This is a very useful tool for any writer. A thesaurus gives you the opportunity to find other words you can use, which will make your writing more interesting. A good thesaurus will give you several other words for every word you can think of. They are very popular with writers and people who do crossword puzzles.

Of course, this is the poor man's version of a keyword tool, and it doesn't give you the other information like, the number of people searching for particular information using a word or phrase, and it doesn't track the visitors to your website that used a particular keyword to find you. It also doesn't tell you the current cost to advertisers for a particular word, which of course, impacts on the money you make per click.

What a thesaurus does give you is several words that mean the same thing, which broadens the chances that someone will find you when they search for something. This of course increases your chances of earning some money from the traffic.

I have a word of caution about keywords, don't over use them. Repeatedly using the same words in a post will make it sound stupid, infact, it may make it sound like a spam post. Properly used, keywords will increase the traffic to your blog and hopefully the type of traffic you need, traffic that is looking for what you have written and will therefore help you make money.
