What do you think of interstitial advertisments? Now before you think I have gone a little wacko, I'm not talking about UFO's and extraterrestials, I'm talking about those advertisments that pop up when you mouse over a keyword in a blog or website. These are popular on some fronts for making money from a website or blog and lets face it, as people trying to make money from websites we are willing to try just about anything at least once.
The word interstitial in this context means in between, and they usually pop up in a separate browser window while you wait for a Web page to load or over top of a loaded webpage when you hold your mouse over an underlined word in a body of text.
Interstitial advertising is yet another idea among all the other ideas that say they can increase the money you make from blogging or a website. They are popular with some folks but not with others.
Some of the studies done on these have found that readers are more likely to click on them than on banner advertisements. That maybe. I was running them for a short time on one of my blogs but recently removed them. Not that they weren't working, they probably were, but to tell the truth, I personally found them so annoying that I decided my readers probably would too. To be honest, I really didn't see much change to my ad revenues since I added them some time ago. Certainly not enough money to prove to me they were worth keeping.
Although the ones I had didn't seem to slow my page loading, I'm told that they often do, which is very annoying as well. You often see these when you get into a porn site and find yourself clicking on one thing only to have something else open before you get to where you intended to go....which might just have been 'back' to get out of the site.
So...here is my point. Even if something may result in making you money, or increases your earnings from a website that doesn't mean you should necessarily add it to your website. You need to be considering your readers, deciding whether or not they will find the add on, in this case interstitial or pop-up advertisements, annoying or not. The name of the game is to attract and keep readers, not drive them away. The same holds for some of the other snazzy widgets that are available. You need to decide if it is really adding value to your reader's experience and if it is adding money to your bank account.
Bloggers do a lot of repeat business. That means if they like ya, they will come back to your blog time and time again. They won't come back if your blog has a lot of annoying gadgets or widgets or is slow to load, which is often what happens when you have a lot of extras. Keep that in mind before deciding to add these types of things to your blog or website. Eyes on the prize...keep your eyes on the prize, more readers and more ad revenue that is what making money from the internet is all about.
