Making money from blogging or a website typically means you need to develop multiple sources of income, rather than try to put all your eggs in one basket. Unless you get big quick, with lots of posts and therefore hits, contextual ads alone probably won't do it. Ask any successful blogger and you will find that most get paid from multiple streams of income, including contextual ads, banner ads, selling a product of their own creation, and promoting other people's products to earn a commission.
Promoting Amazon products on your blog or website is a method of getting some payment for the hard work you put into writing your blog by promoting and earning a commission on sales of various products. Amazon has been around forever, and has refined internet sales to a fine science. They have literally thousands upon thousands of things you can promote and sell on your blog, and get paid a commission for your efforts.
I couldn't begin to list the things available to sell through Amazon, it might be easier to list what isn't available, but to tell the truth I don't know what that is. They books, clothes, shoes, auto accessories, hunting and fishing gear, cameras, hats, boots, dresses, underwear, gloves, golf equipment, bathing suits, garden equipment and tools, computers, DVD's, music CD's, stereos, phones, movies, the list goes on and on, with thousands of subcategories.
You can promote Amazon products in a variety of ways as well. Everything from basic test link ads, banner ads, to creating your own Amazon Stores called A-Stores, which allow you to build your own online store promoting products linked to the theme of your blog. Online stores, or A-Stores as they are called, are simple to create, and you can have 100 of them, although that might be a lot of work to maintain. Here is an example of one of my A-Stores,
SEXY SHOES and another one for campers HERE
A-Stores can be stand alone sites or linked to your blog or website. As a stand alone site I think it might be difficult to promote them to any degree, better used to compliment a blog or website.
Of course you don't need to build A-Stores, you can also show a link to a specific product you want to promote or a list of products through the various widgets and banners they have available, all of which are customizable to fit the look and feel of your website.
The secret I have been able to discover about selling through Amazon is no different than anything else to do with blogging or internet sales, context. Design what you are selling to link or compliment the subject or theme of your blog. For example, if you are writing about cameras or photography, you should be promoting cameras or photography books or accessories. Although you might get an occasional sale for something completely unrelated to your blog, it will be infrequent at best.
Amazon is another great way to earn a little or a lot of money from blogging.

Hey, landed on your blog, nice stuff. I found a cool new tool for our blogs... www.widgetmate.com It helps get latest news for our keywords directly on to our blog. I added it on mine. Worked like a charm.
